A Day in Sound

A Day in Sound

An experiment where I spent a day listening closely to the everyday sounds around me.

a-day-in-sound

In my sleep induced state

I hear chatter, clatter

“Oh, that might be the breakfast plates.”

Faint taps and then mom’s footsteps close in

I already know it’s going to be a long day for me.

Online class resumes,

Sound and music appreciation is what it’s about.

From songs to softwares to soundscapes to installation

I am mind blown.

Did you know it’s a world in it itself

that I have now come to know!

Steven Wilson’s Routine resonates all around,

My dog gazed at me glassy eyed

This must be something after all!

There is a shrill,

Shallow breathes and annoyance all around,

But I do know it must be the drill

Someone is drilling in a wall.

Post lunch,

I put on a movie,

The train whistles somewhere around,

Now I know what the next scene might be about.

Rustling of the leaves accompanies:

the non-diegetic ghoulish tune.

Goosebumps rise all over

I now understand the theme moreover.

A faint doorbell and loud laughter,

It’s finally time, uncle and aunt have come over.

Drinks are served and

Coke Studio song plays along

1 2 3 1 2 3, oh my that was an amazing beat throughout!

I enjoy the textures of the instruments

While my brother typing away on his phone hums along.

I wonder, is ignorance really bliss after all?

At night I lay on the bed.

Silence?

The tick-tock of the clock

And my slowing heartbeat all around

Perhaps now I understand,

The power of sound and music is astound!
